At the age of 57 and the age of retirement, Tian Shihe just started a huge project-the construction of Beijing basketball culture museum, and he devoted his spare time to it.

Tian Shihe once served as the director of Capital Normal University’s infrastructure department for 6 years. During his tenure, he presided over the construction of 260000 square meters of various campus buildings. Although infrastructure was not his major, however, winning the national construction engineering quality award is enough to prove that he has become an infrastructure expert. But what he did this time was quite different. He had to personally select the literature about basketball from the pile of old papers. Those who had already been scattered had to be interviewed by those who were still alive, then, taking the historical context as the keel, it builds a “building” of basketball culture “. This is a vacancy in the development of basketball in China. From scratch is obviously not an easy thing, but it is of great significance.

CUBAL, as a basketball league starting from Beijing, is also a great effort poured into Tian Shihe, and will naturally have a prominent place in this “building. He is the old man of CUBAL, who has been involved in the league since lead time and has been in his 25th year, which means that nearly half of his life is intertwined with CUBAL. Tian Shihe’s resume is very complicated, but in CUBAL, everything becomes simple.

01 on the court, change the way of running

In 1965, Tian Shihe was born in Shunyi district, Beijing, and began to indulge in basketball when he was in high school. “I wish I could sleep with basketball at night.” His academic performance was very good, and some teachers reminded him out of goodwill: “If you want to go to college, don’t play basketball. If you want to play basketball, don’t try to go to college.” But he was not moved, and the basketball didn’t rest — on behalf of the school basketball team, he got the runner-up in the County middle school basketball game, and his study was not affected much, in 1984, he was admitted to the physics department of Beijing Normal University (the predecessor of Capital Normal University) from the rural ordinary Middle School in Beijing suburbs with excellent results.

There were a lot of talents in the university. Tian Shihe’s height of 1.7 meters and his once proud basketball skills were soon not enough. He thought that he could not leave basketball like this and cultivate a basketball-related specialty. At this time, a teacher named Liu Wanfu suggested him, “you like playing basketball, and you also study science. You can also learn to be a basketball referee.” In this way, Tian Shi joined the referee’s door and began to run on the basketball court in another way.

Tian Shihe held a cut image at the basketball court

Tian Shihe’s experience is very representative. Many referees enter the business because they love basketball but do not have the physical quality to become athletes, so they have to “save the country by curve”. If athletes are the masters on the court, the referees are the judges on the court. They can not only participate directly, but also master the power of “survival and death. He knew that power also meant responsibility. There was a light whistle, but there was a huge weight.

The first step, of course, is to recite the basketball rules. Tian Shihe “chewed” the book over and over, and finally you can mention a content. He can tell you the page and article immediately. In addition, he had to practice. He was very devoted to whistle and had a good memory. When he resumed the game with Liu Wanfu after the game, he could almost repeat every whistle he blew, the Master and The Apprentice analyzed the characteristics of the action one by one, determined the right and wrong, advantages and disadvantages of these blowing penalties, and learned from them.

“What is ‘normal ‘? Fan is a mold. Teacher Liu’s attitude towards studying has influenced my outlook on life. He has laid a wish for me. I want to be a teacher from the bottom of my heart.” Tian Shihe said.

Soon, Tian Shihe’s whistle went from Capital Normal University to Beijing.

Once, when Mr. Gong Peishan saw Tian Shihe on whistle, he frowned and asked the people around him, “How can the students blow? Why not let the PE teacher blow?” After watching for a while, he changed again: “This student played well.”

After the game, Liu Wanfu introduced Tian Shihe to Gong Peishan. Gong Peishan said to Liu Wanfu, “We have to train second-level judges among students.” Later, these words came true, and CUBAL became the “seeder” of Chinese University Basketball and even Chinese basketball. The referee was one of the “five kinds of people” it wanted to cultivate. Due to the fate club, Tian Shihe later became the direct executor of the spirit concept of the league.

Last year, Tian Shihe went to visit Mr. Gong Peishan and took a photo with his teacher.

However, at that moment of meeting for the first time, only excitement occupied Tian Shihe’s heart, “I didn’t fall asleep for two or three days after I went back.” He feels that a bright future is waving, and he may have a place to play in the basketball circle.

At that time, judges of different levels correspond to different badge. Only level 1 and national level are qualified to wear badge with the logo of Chinese Basketball Association. The difference is that Level 1 badge has only one star, the national level is five stars. Badge is the referee’s epaulet, which is the goal of all referees.

In order to “bring stars” as soon as possible, Tian Shihe worked harder to train. As expected, his hard work paid off. He became the “only second” person who passed the second-level referee examination in Beijing universities that year. Soon, he was promoted to level one again. At this time, an episode worth playing.

In the process of promotion examination, Tian Shihe almost went out because he was a college student and the examiner at the age of little quilt. It was gong Peishan’s crowd discussion that made him rarely promoted to the national first-class basketball referee as a college student, it is the youngest in the same group of first-class referees. CUBAL later engaged in the training of referees, which was also a talent-only act. He did not engage in seniority and trained many college students’ first-class referees. Tian Shi Hezheng was the first national first-class referee for college students, and the referee for college students started here.

He always remembered Liu Wanfu’s words, “to be a good judge, one must be a good person first”. He still remembered Gong Peishan’s teaching that “being a referee can never have selfish thoughts. Fairness and justice are principles, otherwise it will never be a good referee”.

02 support CUBAL with feelings

Time soon came to June 6, 1996. On this day, more than 60 friends from sports, education and news system held a discussion. Everyone spoke enthusiastically and verified the necessity and feasibility of establishing CUBAL from different angles, this marks that CUBAL’s preparation has entered a formal track.

At that time, Tian Shihe was still young and Junior. He just did some miscellaneous work when the league was founded, stroked the list, sent letters, and sorted out information…… “I had no idea what a great thing I was doing at that time, nor did I think CUBAL could develop into what it is today.”

After running before and after running without pay, Tian Shihe certainly had “selfishness”. He wanted to have more chances to whistle when CUBAL was up. At first, his executive record was limited to a corner of Beijing. He wanted to go to whistle nationwide to blow more whistle. Unfortunately, Tian Shihe missed the first league tournament because he was in time to lead the team to Norway as the head coach to participate in the world university student Orienteering Championship.

At that time, it was pitiful to be a referee in CUBAL with less subsidies. “between us and basketball and CUBAL, it was a feeling. For the sake of money, doing something else in that era earned more than being a referee.” Tian Shihe said, “Looking back now, it is very interesting. It is a process of sharing hardships, and all the participants have no complaints.”

What he said is not false. Since he graduated from university and stayed in school in 1988, Tian Shihe has been in an important position. He is the secretary of the General Branch of the league, the student Chief of the student department, the head of the armed forces department, and the deputy director of the logistics division department, director of Infrastructure division…… In October 2007, he was also seconded to the Beijing Olympic organizing committee, responsible for all personnel training related to the Olympic Games.

However, no matter how busy he is with his work, he insists on going to the competition area at least once in every league. “allowing to participate in CUBAL” even becomes a “necessary condition” for every job transfer to talk to the principal in charge “. We don’t know how the Taoist League got away from the heavy work and came to CUBAL again and again. We only know that he has not missed any league since the 2nd League. Identity may change, but he is always present.

The educational gene of 03CUBAL, the place of enlightenment for international judges

CUBAL has never been a pure competitive league. From the very beginning, it inherited the gene of educating people from the Chinese University campus, which is the carrier of basketball culture transmission. Specifically, it is the cultivation of “five kinds of people”: athletes, coaches, referees, organizers, managers and fans. As one of the “three members” in the basketball court, referees also need to be cultivated. A large number of competitions are the food for their growth. The emergence of CUBAL has promoted the emergence of generations of excellent referees on campus.

Young judges active in the CUBAL Arena, among which there are no shortage of post-zero

In this wave, Tian Shihe was arranged to train referees with several other old referees, and gradually turned into the background in CUBAL’s work. He is no longer a referee, but the identity of “four in one” of competition supervision, technical representative, qualification examination and arbitration. If you think about whistle addiction, you can only compete in Beijing. Since Tian Shi held the official competition in 1986, he has described it as “The recent happiness with basketball”. Now, in addition to teaching students whistle, he also plays some amateur games in the self-built stadium in his hometown. “It seems that the whole body cells are activated after the whistle is put on the stage.”

Tian Shihe, who loves the referee career so much, shows the screw spirit of the older generation of practitioners. For the long-term development of the league, they are willing to give up something.

Tian Shihe also has an important job, which is to be responsible for the referee business training and the first-level referee examination registration in the annual summer camp. He will not only organize and manage, but also teach and coach young referees. The enthusiasm of the students is very high. Those who apply for the first-class referee can reach nearly 200 people every year.

Soon after, the referees trained and approved by CUBAL began to “take up their posts”. Their figures were active in a large number of grass-roots competitions, as well as in partition competitions and national competitions. With the passage of time, many of them have grown into national and even international judges. He is the head of the competition in the CBA North control team’s home court. Most of the judges he sees have CUBAL’s experience in ruling.

CUBAL did not dare to be greedy for the merit of heaven and said that the success of these referees was his own credit, but what could not be ignored was that these referees completed the Enlightenment and started in CUBAL, it is CUBAL that provides the necessary nourishment for their first stage of growth. “From the second level to the first level, and then to the national level, CUBAL started to cultivate.” Tian Shihe said.

Training referees will certainly be accompanied by growing pains. It is like opening a box. You have to get the key to unlock it first, but the key is in the box. There is a paradox here: if you don’t play high-level matches, you will never be a high-level referee, but if you can’t become a high-level referee, you will rarely have the opportunity to play high-level matches.

As an executor, Tian Shihe’s work is also very difficult. On the one hand, some young judges are whistle bad enough to make him “numb”; On the other hand, he has to endure not to say heavy words, “We have to protect their enthusiasm, give them time and space to grow up.”

It is not difficult to see that there are indeed many difficult choices between cultivating young referees and ensuring the quality of the competition in the early CUBAL. Practitioners carefully maintain the hard-won balance and push CUBAL to formalization and modernization a little by little.

04 at the end of the workplace, it will eventually become a full-time sports person.

Everything mentioned above is done by Tian Shihe’s part-time job. He has many full-time identities, but he does not touch sports. In 2016, he stated the reason to the school leaders with CUBAL’s experience. If he wished, he was appointed as the secretary of the party general branch of the sports teaching and research department of Capital Normal University. After 28 years of busy work in various positions unrelated to sports, he finally got his long-cherished wish at the end of his career and became a real sports man. “Before, my heart was in sports and my body was not there. Now my body is back, and my body and mind are integrated and returned.” Tian Shihe said.

In the new position, Tian Shihe set up a public elective course of “basketball rules and basketball referee law”, realizing his wish to be a PE teacher in the student age, continue to sow the seeds of basketball referees on the university campus with a rigorous and responsible attitude.

This class is very popular with students, and every semester is full. Only one semester in the middle did not open, so the students wrote the letter to the headmaster’s mailbox. Tian Shihe hopes that this class will enable students to “understand the competition with a professional eye”, at least not to scold “black whistle” because they do not understand the rules “; I also hope that students will know how to play basketball and” play more interesting “; I also hope that after they arrive at the teaching position in the future, being able to establish a knowledgeable teacher Image in students’ mind by virtue of their mastery of basketball knowledge is helpful for their teaching and educating work.

“Fancy basketball rules” published by editor-in-chief Tian Shihe

Sometimes, he would invite his good friends Zhang Lei and Zheng Lei to teach live by two international judges (the former is five-person basketball and the latter is three-person basketball). He also often gets tickets from Beijing control’s home court and distributes them to students to let them experience the charm of basketball on the spot. All of the above make many students determined to become real judges. At present, among the 200 or 300 students who have attended the basketball referee class, most of them have done the record desk referee of Beijing University competitions, most of them have passed the national level 3 referee examination of basketball, and more than 30 people have passed the national level 2 referee examination, three people have already executed the first-class league in the CUBAL Beijing Division, and one of them is preparing for the national level.

Tian Shihe played the whistle for half his life and trained referees for more than ten years, but he was trapped in height, age and opportunity and never crossed the national level, even the badge he had been worried about had already withdrawn from the stage of history, but he was happy to see the students do it for themselves. He didn’t plan much, “as long as I see that they are still doing it and I can say hello to me during the competition, I will be satisfied.” Tian Shihe said.

In order to praise Tian Shihe’s outstanding contribution to the cause of Chinese basketball referee, the State Sports General Administration awarded him the title of “national honorary referee” for basketball in 2012.

In October 2021, Tian Shihe was elected as the vice chairman of Beijing Basketball Association. Now he is also the secretary general of basketball branch of Beijing University Sports Association. At present, the most enthusiastic thing is to organize basketball public welfare training for basketball experts, basketball stars, university teachers and college student volunteers in remote areas across the country, covering Guizhou, Qinghai, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, there are many remote areas in Hebei.

He also wanted to take advantage of his energy to make the Beijing basketball culture museum vigorous. First, he collected and sorted out materials, photos and cultural relics, made an online digital museum, and then became a physical museum when the time was ripe. Among them, CUBAL is bound to be an indispensable and important component.

The website of Beijing basketball culture museum under construction

“Basketball lacks cultural connotation, and its influence is limited to one competition. It is difficult to integrate into human blood and memory, and it is difficult to inherit. Therefore, we need to make a basketball culture museum to enrich the connotation of basketball culture, promote the spirit of basketball.” Tian Shihe said.

He started to build a basketball Museum when he was in his fifties. Tian Shi didn’t think it was too late to merge. He smiled: “When CUBAL was held for the first time, Mr. Gong was 69 years old and I was still young.” In his view, no matter building CUBAL or museum, there is something in common: they all need a little spirit of Yugong moving mountains and feelings for basketball.
